Our Staff

We thought you might like to learn a little bit more about what our staff get up to when they are not in the office or out trekking.

In 2014 three of our trekking staff attended a basic mountaineering course at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling. Angmo, Lanzes, and Tsetan excelled themselves and showed the class that Ladakhi women are a force to be reckoned with, prompting questions from fellow classmates about what women eat in Ladakh that makes them so strong! They all received class medals: Angmo picked up a total of 3 medals with Gold for best technique, and came first in both the climbing and running competitions; Tsetan came second in the running competition; Lanzes came third in both the running and climbing competitions. Well done! All three will be taking an advanced mountaineering course this year.

At the end of each trekking season LWTC has a staff outing. In 2014 nineteen of us went for a three day tour to Tso Moriri. Everyone enjoyed the drive and scenery along the way. The next day we visited Korzok monastery, then walked along the lake side where some of our staff even went for a paddle despite the cold! Afterwards everyone helped cook a meal and we all warmed up with some dancing. Early the next morning we left to return to Leh, visiting Tso Khar and Thukjay Gompa on the way. We were also lucky enough to see some Tibetan wild asses and black-necked cranes.

Sometimes people can be a bit lazy in winter, but not LWTC staff! To keep our levels of fitness up, some of us took up ice skating, while others rediscovered it. Thinlas bought our skates, but when we decided at the last minute to form an ice hockey team and take part in a couple of tournaments, we had to borrow equipment from SECMOL and the Ladakh Winter Sports Club - a big thank you for that! We all had great fun and this will hopefully become a regular winter sport for LWTC staff. Find out more about our matches on .

Our office manager, Kunzes, likes to keep busy. This is not a problem during our busy trekking season, but outside that time she has been hard at work studying and has just completed a Masters in History. Congratulations from us all! As well as playing ice hockey in winter, she took part in a 4-week Women's Leadership tour. A group of 64 women from Ladakh visited other areas in India and took part in workshops discussing the issues faced by women. Read more here.
